Naturopathy is a distinct system of medicine which recognises that in the event of illness the body possesses a self regulatory, inherent capacity for self healing. Naturopaths aim to identify and eliminate the causes of illness and facilitate recovery by providing a healing environment for the individual. The provision of healthcare is guided by six naturopathic principles:
The healing power of nature (Vis Medicatrix Naturea )
Identify and treat the cause (Tolle Causam )
First do no harm (Primum Non Nocere)
Doctor as teacher (Docere)
Treat the Whole Person
Prevention is Better than cure
Disease is not the cause of illness but a sign that the body is out of balance, therefore an individual's physical, mental, emotional and spiritual well-being is considered important for health restoration. Naturopathy focuses on empowering the individual through client education and encouraging self-responsibility for health. Recommendations are often made in relation to dietary and lifestyle changes that will restore health and herbal or nutritional supplements may be prescribed.
